Most failed downloads come down to a handful of causes, and almost all of them are quick to fix. Work through this list from the top – the most common problems come first.
1. The account is private
If the account is private, its posts, Reels and stories can only be seen by approved followers – and that applies to every downloader too. Open the link in a private browser window while logged out of Instagram: if you can’t see the post there, it can’t be downloaded.
2. The post was deleted or archived
A link keeps working in your chat history long after the owner removed or archived the post. Same test: open it while logged out.
3. The link is incomplete
Links that were shortened, cut off at the end of a message or copied from a screenshot often break. Copy it again with Instagram’s own “Copy link” button. Our guide on finding the link to any post, Reel or profile shows where that button lives.
4. Age-restricted or region-limited content
Some accounts limit their content to adults or to certain countries. Instagram doesn’t show that content to logged-out visitors, so it can’t be fetched.
5. Instagram is rate-limiting
If you see “Instagram is busy right now”, Instagram is temporarily slowing requests down. Wait a minute and try again – it clears up on its own.
6. You pasted the right link into the wrong box
Each tool accepts every Instagram link type, but stories and highlights need either the story link or a username. If you typed a username into the video tool, switch to the Story, Highlights or Profile tab.
7. The browser blocks downloads
- iPhone: iOS 13 or newer is required. Turn off content blockers for the site (aA › Website Settings).
- Android: make sure the browser is allowed to store files and the phone isn’t out of space.
- Computer: if the video plays in a new tab instead of downloading, right-click the button and choose “Save link as…”.
8. The page was open too long
Download links are valid for a few hours and only on the device that created them. If you left the page open overnight or copied the download button’s link to another phone, just paste the Instagram link again to get fresh ones.
9. An ad blocker or VPN interferes
Aggressive blocklists sometimes break the preview images. Try with the blocker paused for insta4dl. Some VPNs also change your IP address mid-session, which makes freshly created download links stop working – fetch the post again after the VPN connects.
